Princess Margaret Hospital

Medical Treatment - Eating Disorders Program

Medical assessment and subsequent appointments allow the paediatrician to:

  • recognise the consequences of starvation or other eating disorder behaviours
  • recognise the behaviours contributing to weight loss and how it affects each individual
  • minimise the physical complications of the eating disorder
  • help the individual manage their disorder and limit it's effect on their life

At each visit the young person will be weighed, their symptoms assessed and a physical examination focusing on the heart and brain will be conducted. At intervals there is also an assessment of pubertal development, which is an important indication of the severity of chronic starvation.

The decision to admit an individual to hospital will be based upon the severity of malnutrition, as determined by weight, pulse, blood pressure and body temperature, or other medical complications as a result of eating disorders behaviours.
