Access to the Service

If you are concerned about a young person, you can call the program during office hours and speak to the triage officer.

For a comprehensive assessment and to access treatment through the program, an official referral will be requested. The team will accept referrals for young people up to 16 years of age. Referrals are accepted statewide.

For families from rural/remote areas, videoconferecing can be arranged, however a face-to-face meeting might be preferable, and arrangements for financial support may be possible via PATS.

Families from non-English speaking backgrounds can request an interpreter, which will be arranged through the hospital.

The building is wheelchair accessible.

Referrals can be made by:

  • a general practitioner
  • a school psychologist
  • a paediatrician
  • a social worker
  • a psychiatrist
  • a dietitian
  • any other agency the young person may have contact with

The referral should be send to:

Triage Officer
Eating Disorder Program
Specialised Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service
Princess Margaret Hospital for Children
GPO Box D184
Perth 6840

Or via fax to 9340 7700

Once a referral has been received, the triage officer will contact the referrer as well as the family to discuss suitability and time frames for potential assessment. Resources to support health professionals involved in the care of the patient and family until assessment is completed are available.

A rapid response for some young people may be required. The Triage Officer can be contacted Monday to Friday during office hours, and our doctors and training coordinator are available to provide professional support.

For emergencies, please present to the Emergency Department at Princess Margaret Hospital. Severe dizziness and fainting may indicate a life threatening situation in a person with an eating disorder, and immediate medical help should be sought.
