Haematology - Transfusion Medicine Protocols
PathWest is the laboratory service provider for King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (KEMH) and Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH). The two hospital laboratories specialise in paediatric, fetal, neonatal, obstetric and gynaecological laboratory medicine.
The laboratories are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) Australia.The Haematologists within Laboratory Services are Dr C Cole, Dr J Price and Dr D Baker at PMH and Dr A Barr at KEMH.
The Transfusion Services at the hospitals are based across the two sites with a Senior Transfusion Scientist in charge of operations at both laboratories. A Transfusion Coordinator also works across the two sites undertaking Transfusion education updates, audit and adverse incident investigation.
Each site has a Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC). The main objective of the HTC is to promote the highest standard of transfusion practice and to promote discussion and dialogue between all staff involved in the transfusion process. The HTC reports to the medical advisory committee.
