Animal companion visits to Princess Margaret Hospital commenced in 2003 through Animal Companions Inc.
A human volunteer and their animal companion visit the hospital each week bringing laughter and smiles to the faces of the children, their families and staff. The children are often in awe and amazement that a dog is actually allowed to come and visit the hospital.
All Animal Companion dogs undergo specific training and are screened as behaviour suitable and also receive regular health checks to ensure they are in the optimum of health. Animal Companion dogs must be bathed and groomed before visiting the hospital and are always under the control of their handler.
Evidence shows that quality of life for those being visited is enhanced through pets by providing positive distraction from hospitalisation, companionship and by alleviating loneliness. It is also a unique opportunity for children who may not have pets at home to engage with an animal in a safe environment.
