Triple P Parenting Program

What is Triple P?

Triple P is a parenting program offered to all parents of children aged three to five years.

All parents want to have a positive relationship with their child. Sometimes this can be challenging when children are demanding, disobedient, defiant, throw temper tantrums or are generally disruptive.

Triple P teaches practical, effective ways to manage common issues most parents will face at some time, such as:

  • tantrums
  • meal time & bed time difficulties
  • whingeing
  • disobedience
  • hurting others
  • Wandering

Parents are invited to participate in this eight-week parenting program to learn:

  • effective parenting strategies
  • ways to encourage behaviour you like
  • how to promote your child's development
  • how to prevent or manage common child behaviour problems

Grandparents and other carers are welcome to attend Triple P too.

What Parents say… and the Research

Triple P has been proven to help parents raise happy, confident children. The program is based on over 25 years of research that shows the importance of positive, effective parenting.

Parenting Research and Practice Monograph No.1

Western Australian parents have said this about Triple P:

"I attended the Positive Parenting Program about four years ago with my then 3 year old son. The results were fantastic. We have a great relationship now, and I feel that my learning how to be consistent and following through with consequences for his behaviour, all learned in the Triple P sessions, is what turned us around."

"The program clarified for me that I was doing a good job but could improve in certain areas."

"Being in a group situation was helpful to realise most children are similar and that as a parent(s) we are not alone."

"An excellent program that every parent should do."

"It has helped me enormously with my two children and it has given me a lot of confidence."

"I found the program very helpful.  Life will never be the same again, only better."

How Will Triple P Help?

The program aims to help parents teach their children important social skills, such as how to:

  • communicate their needs and wants
  • be polite and courteous
  • control their tempers
  • share and play cooperatively
  • play independently

There is no one right way to be a parent. Triple P suggests simple routines and small changes that can make a big difference to your family.

Some parenting strategies discussed in the program include:

  • giving affection
  • talking and listening to your child
  • promoting desirable behaviour
  • encouraging independence
  • providing engaging activities

The program also includes strategies to help you prevent or deal effectively with problems when they arise.

A free parenting workbook is provided to help parents keep using the strategies after the program finishes.

You will find these strategies useful for your children as they get older too.

Program Details

The Positive Parenting Program involves:

  • A two-hour group workshop session once a week for four weeks, followed by
  • A 15 minute follow-up phone call session once a week for four weeks.

In some areas, parents will be given the option to meet again as a group, rather than receive the last phone call session. This will be discussed at your individual group.

Parents will also be asked to complete confidential questionnaires to help ensure the program meets individual needs. Please ask your program facilitator if you have any concerns about these questionnaires.

This program is scheduled at different venues and times during each school term. Childcare is available for many of the programs.

There may be a small fee to attend the program. Please ask when you register.

Five Key Principles of Positive Parenting

Triple P is based on five key principles of positive parenting:

  1. Ensuring a safe, interesting, environment where children can explore, experiment and develop their skills.
  2. Creating a positive learning environment by being available when children need help, care or attention.
  3. Using assertive discipline by being consistent and acting quickly when children misbehave.
  4. Having realistic expectations for children and for yourself as a parent.
  5. Taking care of yourself as a parent and ensuring personal needs are met.
